Lava rock does not contain lime or other substances that are released and is therefore ideal for use in the aquarium. Since it does not contain lime, lava rock is also suitable for use in an aquarium with a pH-lowering bottom.
Lava rock is very porous, which means that these stones also provide slight filtration of the water. Filter bacteria live on the outside of the stone, converting waste products into nitrates that aquarium plants can absorb. Shrimp also like to graze on these stones, which allows them to find extra food.
